Hapi McKenzie & Patty Pfister “The Crabgrass Cowboys” Humor still plays a vital role in Hapi and Patty’s music, yet their sound is rooted deep in the traditional American style. The lighthearted approach is supported by solid songwriting and musicianship. The band is tight throughout “Roll it Home” and Patty’s violin playing is especially notable. She blends seamlessly with Larson’s pedal steel on the ballad “Riding The Wind” and plays some very impressive riffs on “The Saga Of Sunny and Sally” (a song about a male/female musical duo that could be autobiographical). While contemporary country music keeps sounding more and more like mainstream pop, Hapi and Patty dig deeper into the music’s roots. Yet the music on “Roll it Home” is too vibrant to be considered retro or nostalgia. The 19-song CD version of “Roll It Home” includes the act’s previous “Lookin’ Mighty Fine” release in its entirety.
